Can You Do Anything to Prevent Sensitive Teeth?

There isn’t really anything you can do to prevent sensitive teeth besides having great oral hygiene. Having sensitive teeth is a very common dental issue that needs to be addressed before it gets worse. Here at Gaston Dental Associates, we are one of the best dental offices that’s located in Gastonia, North Carolina and in this article, we are going to be discussing what you can do to try to prevent sensitive teeth.

How to Prevent Sensitive Teeth

To prevent sensitive teeth, we need to get a good understanding of how and why it hurts. Having sensitive teeth is painful when it comes. It’s usually a sharp and sudden pain that can last anywhere from 30 seconds to two minutes. The reason why you get these sharp pains is because your teeth are sensitive when you eat or drink anything hot, cold, or sugary. The enamel has been worn down and is exposing the dentin. That’s where the nerves of your teeth are stored and when they are exposed it will send that jolting pain through them when they are affected with something hot or cold. In some cases, people can experience this pain when they brush and floss their teeth also.

If you have any cavities, cracked teeth, gum recession, enamel or root erosion all of these can trigger the pain in sensitive teeth. Dentin contains thousands of little tubules that leads to your tooth’s pulp and when exposed to heat, cold, acidic and sticky substances this will cause the pain. Here is a list of some factors that can contribute to sensitive teeth.

·        Brushing to hard with a hard-bristled toothbrush.

·        Gum recession.

·        Gingivitis.

·        Cracked teeth.

·        If you grind or clench your teeth.

·        Plaque buildup
